PART II A LEG UP adding legs to furniture

Ive given you some tips to adding legs to your furniture projects,

now I want to share different styles and types with you.

The 3 legs used on this corner unit

were salvaged from a little queen anne side table.

The legs on this media console are sections cut from uprightson an octagon 70s side table.Most of you know the ones, next time you see onestop and grab it.

Even a bed frame can have bun feet added to lift it up.

These bun feet if I recall correctly were found on a curb side love seat.

Just stop the car, jump out, unscrew each leg, and your on your way.

I dont have one great source for legs, I simply watch for them every where I go.

An important thing to keep in mind when thinking about installing legs

is the weight of the furniture and the strength of your legs and install.

And of course if your furniture is better suited for casters

dont stop until you find a great industrial set.

Who doesnt like furniture that moves easily?

MCM with custom hairpin legs!

I picked up this piece for a good price, sans legs! Which is fine. I have been wanting

to order some hairpin legs and attach those to the right piece.

Looks pretty rough right?? Dont be afraid to pick up a piece that looks like this. Wood is so forgiving!

(Sometimes!) Although these are usually veneered, if the damage isnt too deep, you can sand it right off!

I was going to paint it. But the wood really turned out nice. Then I thought I would just paint the drawers. But they really turned out nice! Well I had to paint something! So I did the turquoise

on the insets, but it wasnt enough. So, I though I would try some graphic lines. Done!

Frog tape!

I did graduating grits for sanding, conditioned it prior to staining, used "Kona" to stain, another fine sanding, and then a semi-gloss sealer from "Deft". Used steel wool on that, and then a second coat!

Look at how rich this walnut is!! I just love it with turquoise or orange. Plus it fits the era.

I realize not everyone is into mid century modern. Its different. But I like to do all kinds of

furniture. This is a complete 180 from the antique buffet I just did in milk paint. Two

completely different techniques as well. But thats what I like. Variation. And just like people, there

is a piece of furniture for everyones liking!

A very popular question I get asked about is the legs I add to many of my furniture pieces.

So I thought I would share some project photos and information

to show how dramatic and fun it can be.

Im not going to suggest its simple or easy.

Most every piece needs to be altered in some way to accept a set of legs.

On this particular dresser I had to add an apron around the exterior and bracing between the legs.

Measuring, cutting, gluing, clamping and screwing are needed to be done

when doing these kinds of installs to vintage furniture.

The set of solid wood legs used on this dresser came from a MDF topped coffee table.

I generally only use 2 fancy legs on the front and stock lumber legs

on the back. Below you can see the 4 solid oak legs used on this set above.

This was the bottom of a very strange open box cabinet thing I found at a yard sale.

Once I added these mini Queen Anne legs this dresser was looking fabulous.

Here is another dresser that originally sat flat on the floor before coming to me.

This black beauty needed to be re-enforced before I could safely add the new feet.
The legs used were purchased new at Windsor Plywood in Langley.

FURNITURE LEGS adding legs to a dresser

She was a perfect canditate for a set of legs.

Pictured above left she is sitting on one of Georges flower boxes

and is still short in stature.

Someone started to strip her before we found her at a yard sale last month.

She also had a large white mystery mark in the top surface. HEAT?

Before adding the legs I had to add an apron around the base.

No one picked up this hutch we offered at our yard sale, so I scavenged the

parts I needed. Plz note, most of this hutch is MDF but the decorative parts are solid wood.

Next some bits had to be removed, and some bits needed to be manufatured to

make a custom fit for these legs stolen from .....

Again this table and apron are dreaded MDF, but the legs are solid wood.

MDF only has one place in our world ......

I love how she turned out with the original hardware, aged sliding mirror doors,
lovely curves, and white distressed finish.

I adore this dresser vanity, its the kind of piece I see in so many of your

vintage home decor stores. The kind you walk by stroking your hand across

wishing it was yours, wishing your bedroom felt like this.

I want my whole house to look like this!
